4-H Auction Pays Off Hard Work
By Anthony Congi
IDAHO FALLS - The 4-H fair is in full swing at the fair grounds in Idaho Falls. Tonight's auction is the culmination of a full year's work for the youngsters who raised their animals all year long.
Certain sheep can net a couple hundred dollars, swine anywhere from one to four hundred and steers can pocket over 2-thousand dollars. A sweet reward for all the hard work "It really does pay off. all the hard work going to other shows, practicing at home and have it all pay off...it feels so good when you finally get to this point," says 4-H member Meghan Wescoat. Before the big finale, 4-H members get a chance to see exactly what the judges go through. Judging sheep, steers and pigs, each member of the group picks a winner and has to explain to a judge why the one they pick should be crowned champion. The kids have to be both knowledgeable and informative about the animal. Learning to judge at an early age can benefit the young ones for not only picking out better animals next year, and down the road. "Judging them, you get a different aspect. you get to pick out your own animals and see which ones...and you can even go into college and judge collegiately so you can be hired for a fair," says Wescoat. The winning animals from this fair will qualify for the state fair in Blackfoot with the potential of going to nationals in Denver, CO. Thursday night's auction is at 7 o'clock at the 4-H fair ground off Rolandet in Idaho Falls. |
