St. Anthony Streets in Major Need of Help; Citizens Asked to Give Input

ST. ANTHONY - People living in St. Anthony got to voice their opinions Wednesday night about one of the city's biggest problems...the roads.

The mayor and city council held a public open house to get input on how citizens want to see their streets fixed.

"The majority of the streets at least need some sort of seal coat," says St. Anthony City Clerk Taci Stoddard.

Almost every road in St. Anthony needs to be fixed and the city wants it done the right way.

For the past two years, engineering firms have examined every street and come up with a comprehensive plan on what needs to be done to get the roads up to par.

"The remaining service life on the majority of our streets are eight to ten years or less," says Stoddard.

Everything from crack and chip sealing to scrub coating to completely removing and replacing streets - the list of repairs is long and the city wants its own people to decide how to do it.

"The council wants to visit with people that come in about that and what they think would be the best solution," Stoddard says.

St. Anthony is looking at three different options to fix the streets. One would cost 15.8 million dollars, another 10.7 million dollars, and the final four million dollars.

The more expensive plans provide the most repairs but city workers say the four million dollar plan may be adequate enough.

"The city engineer feels with that option that the city streets could last pretty well," says Stoddard.

It may take a while before city leaders and the public agree on how much to spend on the roads but right now everyone agrees on one thing.

"Do you think most people think something needs to be done?" asked reporter Nate Eaton.

Stoddard responded, "Yes. I think that's one of the main things the council members and the mayor hear all the time is, 'What are we gonna do about city streets?'"
