IFYAC Summer Theater Camp Performs Pocahontas

IFYAC Summer Theater Camp Performs Pocahontas

By Mary Sturgill

Some Eastern Idaho kids have been at a special camp for the last two weeks. It's the Idaho Falls Youth Arts Centre Summer theater Camp.
It offers the typical camp experience and so much more. We all march to the beat of a different drummer. But for two weeks each summer the kids in our area come together on the same beat for IFYAC's Summer Theater Camp.

"I just come back every year because I just have such a blast and meet so many new people. It's great!" -Celeste Godfrey, Plays Charity Matthews

Those new people become new friends, a message this year's play Pocahontas conveys to campers. Leslie Wright has been coming to camp for 8 years. She plays the Wordspinner. "She just kind of comments on the action and she'll add a different perspective I think."

So how do you get all these different perspectives on the same verse and the same steps?

"It just happens. You look at the words, you look at the kids abilities and what they are able to accomplish and you try to fit something so they look like a core or a group."

This group certainly has learned a lot. "We've done so much choreography and so many songs in such a short amount of time. It's really amazing what we get to do every year and it's a lot of fun."

Summer Theater Camp isn't just about the acting singing and dancing that takes place on stage, it's also about artistic design and set design. As a matter of fact some campers even made this longhouse.

Choreographer, Nicki Thiel, "We hope that they learned a lot about theater manners, how to behave on stage and how to act in front of a group, and some self confidence, some body awareness and just hopefully they had a good time."

These kids have had fun, but they've learned life lessons too. Celeste Godfrey plays Charity Matthews. "She's just so sweet to everybody and I could take that and use it in my own life probably."

Everyone has their favorite part of the experience. Emily Crowly plays Aunt Morningstar, "It's been really awesome, it's really fun and I think it's a great way for like kids and like teenagers to get involved in theater and stuff."

Monica Hulse plays Esther, "There's a lot of the parts I like. I do like the Popsicles at the end."

EIRMC is sponsoring the camp this year. You have two opportunities to see Pocahontas. The kids will perform a matinee tomorrow at 1:30 and another show at 6:30 tomorrow night at Rocky Mountain Middle School. Admission is $4 at the door.
