Bingham County Woman Accused of Killing Husband

BINGHAM COUNTY - A Bingham County woman is in jail tonight after allegedly killing her husband. The Sheriff's Office got a call last night around midnight that a man had committed suicide, but investigators believe it was murder.

When officers arrived at the home of 45-year-old Greg Porter last night he was already dead. Porter had been shot once in the head with a 22-caliber rifle.

After examing his body and the weapon officers say things didn't seem right. Cpt. Mark Cowley, with the Bingham County Sheriff's Office said, "Once the detectives were on scene and were able to process the scene, and compare the statements of the female subject that was at home with the evidence that was on scene they determined that it was not a suicide, but it was homicide."

That's when Greg's wife, 52-year-old Dorthy Porter, was arrested and charged with first degree murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm. "We can determine issues like suicide versus homicide and that's one of the primary things we look at on all calls," said Cowley.

During a court appearance this afternoon Porter was visibly emotional, and responded to the judge in short statements. Judge Ryan Boyer set her bail at $500,000 after Prosecuting Attorney Scott Andrew discussed his concern that porter was a flight risk.

Even though Bingham County has seen murders in the past, officers say this one just seemed to come out of the blue. Cowley said, "They were pretty much under the rader, law-abiding, good people."

Back in 1993 Dorthy Porter was convicted of felony drug charges, making it illegal for her to be in possession of a firearm. If she's convicted of all the charges Porter will face a possible sentence of life in prison.
