Backed Over on The Beach Leads to Chain Reaction

By Todd Kunz

BEAR LAKE CO. - New information tonight in the two accidents at Bear Lake that sends as many as seven people to the hospital. The first accident on the beach led to the second one, involving a Bear Lake County deputy en route.

As of Friday night, Bear Lake Memorial Hospital administrators say they have at least one remaining patient in their care.

A one-year old infant was Life-Flighted to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Michele Pereira was also Life-Flighted to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah while Carlos and Chantal Pereira were treated and released. All involved are from Orem and Springville, Utah.

Idaho State Police tell Eyewitness News, 25-year old Melissa Peterson of Orem, Utah was attempting to back up at Ford F-150 extended cab pick-up truck to an awning on the beach, when she mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. She then hit Carlos Pereira of Orem and backed over Michele Pereira, Chantal Pereira, Nicole Pereira March and the infant. Both Air-Idaho and Life-Flight were dispatched, with one landing on the beach and the other at Bear Lake Memorial.

While law enforcement was en route to the accident, one of the Bear Lake County deputies was involved in a wreck with a bale wagon on Highway 89 in the town of Bloomington. We're told the police car hit the bale wagon while going around it and three other cars that were following the wagon and waiting for it to turn left. The deputy rolled his car, but was not hurt. The bale wagon crashed into a nearby shed, destroying it, and putting the driver, Todd Wallentine in the hospital with a compound fracture of the left leg.

All charges and both accidents are still being investigated.
