Involuntary Manslaughter Trial-Day 2

Involuntary Manslaughter Trial-Day 2

By Araksya Karapetyan

The Chitta Lynch trial comes to an end.
The verdict is in.
It took the jury about three hours to come back with a guilty verdict.
Chitta Lynch was found guilty on both counts, involuntary manslaughter, and use of a deadly weapon.

It was an emotional day in court, long before the verdict came in.
Especially, when Lynch took the stand in her own defense and went back in time to the day of the shooting.
That day in her kitchen, when her sister Diane Khamone asked to see this gun.
So, Lynch took it out of the cabinet, to show her.
Then according to Lynch, it just went off.

Chitta Lynch: "All of the sudden it went off. That's all I remember. After gun went off I said 'Oy!'. Kind of surprised. What happened? The gun went off."

And that's where the defense and the prosecution disagreed.
The defense agrees with the prosecution that Lynch is responsible for her sisters death, but they insist it was an accident. She had no criminal intent.
In fact, during her testimony, Lynch even says she never pulled the trigger.

The prosecution on the other hand says, bottom line her behavior was reckless and negligent, and Khamone is dead. Dead as a result of a gunshot wound to the neck.
In the end, it seems the jury agreed.

Lynch is scheduled to be sentenced in August.
Conviction of involuntary manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Because she was also found guilty of the use of a deadly weapon, she could face up to 25 years behind bars.
