13 People Injured in Wreck; Traveling to High School Graduation

By Nate Eaton

At least 13 people on their way to a high school graduation are lucky to be alive after a horrible accident on Highway 20.

It happened around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon in Madison County near the Lorenzo Bridge.

Four cars were involved in the accident. The first two vehicles slowed down because of construction. The third car didn't realize the other two were slowing and ran into the cars. Then, a Suburban slammed into all three.

Tom Banneck's wife and six kids were in the Suburban traveling to the Rigby High School graduation at BYU-Idaho.

Tom Banneck, Wife and Kids in Accident: "I used to be a Firefighter/EMT and I've been at a lot of wrecks. It's a little bit different when it's your own vehicle and own family."

Tom's wife complained of chest pain and may have some broken ribs but she and her kids should all be okay.

Banneck: "The two that are going to the hospital...one has a possible broken ankle and one with neck and back pain."

After being closed for about an hour, Highway 20 re-opened, the wreck was cleaned up, and a family of eight was reunited again at the hospital on a graduation day that will always be remembered.

Banneck: "[It's] kind of a worst nightmare scenario to have six of your seven kids and your wife all in a wreck at one time."

In another vehicle, a 42-year-old man and 16-year-old teenage boy were taken to Madison Memorial Hospital. They were released around 5:30pm Wednesday evening.
