Home Invasions on the Rise

Today's traumatic home invasion in Idaho Falls is the third in only nine months.

It's a sudden increase in violent crime considering that before 2007 Idaho Falls had never experienced this type of armed burglary.

At this point, suspects from neither of the previous home invasions have been caught.

We first brought the Schlafke's traumatizing story back in August.

Within minutes two armed men entered their home, tied them up, and held them at gunpoint.

"They came in this front door and they just cut a hole in it and they reached in and they were in before we knew it," says Paul Schlafke. "I just thought that's it, we're done."

It was the first home invasion Idaho Falls had ever seen. The thieves took the couples Buick, along with jewelry, credit cards and antique guns.

The next day police found the Buick and searched it for finger prints, but so far the evidence hasn't led to any arrests, and the case remains under investigation.

Less than three months later another Idaho Falls neighborhood was rocked by a similar armed robbery.

Three men barged into this home and tied up the entire family including the children. They took valuable coins and jewelry.

"I'm just nervous, hoping they're not going to come back," says one neighbor.

Tonight, the uncertainty continues. Despite an extensive police investigation, all of the leads dried up, and the men are still on the loose.

"You're not always safe, even though we're a close community things do happen," says another neighbor.

I spoke with Lt. Joe Cawley on the phone. He tells me they haven't given up on either of these investigations.

In fact, detectives believe they may have found the people responsible for the first home invasion that happened in August.

I'm told the suspects are wanted for other crimes in other areas and so the IFPD is waiting on the federal investigators before taking any action.

Cawley also tells me, these crimes are especially difficult to solve because the suspects often come into town, pick a house and take off following the crime.
