"Its Just A Plant"

"Its Just A Plant"

By Jennifer McGraw

The book is called "It's Just a Plant: a children's story about marijuana."
This is no Dr. Seuss book. It may be a colorful illustration and interesting storyline, but if you do not condone pot, this might not be the book for you or your children.
Tthe story begins like so many other children's tales. Little Jackie wakes up in the middle of the night, but soon discovers a whole new smell.
Jackie smells something sweet in the air and walks down the hall to her parents room where she finds mommy and daddy, well, lighting up.
Are you and daddy smoking a cigarette…no baby, this is a joint it's made of marijuana.
We follow Jackie's adventure with her mom - in which the child talks to a variety of people about marijuana.
They include some guys on the street who tell her all the different names for it - and the police officer who arrests the guys on the street for smoking it.
Jennifer McGraw: "Jackie's parents took her to see a farm. He said it was just a flower and it has different affects on adults and that presidents and doctors did it too."
Yes, even the ones who claim they didn't inhale.
We showed the book to parents outside teresa bunker elementary school whose reactions were those of shock and appall.
Clancy Passey, (parent) "Well shocked. I can't believe they are writing a children's book just a plant first of all."
Mary Ann Smith, (parent) "Marijuana is not harmless, it could be addictive."
When I asked them if they would ever show it to their children they said...
Heather Maynes, (PTO President): "It's not just a plant like the book says. It's a deadly drug."
As you might imagine they were also shocked that parents marched in Portland's million marijuana march with the book in hand who feel the drug should be legalized.
The author of "It's just a plant", Ricardo Cortes, says after working in public schools and in drug policy - he felt there needed to be a new way to talk with children about marijuana.
The author says the book is to show the dangers, the effects and the benefits of marijuana.
If you are worried about your children reading this book, you can relax.
The book cannot be found anywhere in town. The author self-published the book because he says no publishing house would touch it. You can still purchase "It's Just A Plant" on the internet.
