Only on 3: Menan City Clerk Speaks Out on Allegations

By Anthony Congi

The town is still shaken up a bit by the recent events. Many say that the mayor has done wonders for the town, but others say he never spoke up about his concerns. Either way, the former mayor is now a regular citizen.
In an interview with Channel 3 last night, the former mayor of Menan said, the final straw was in last Thursday's city council meeting when the council approved a special use permit that he felt went against the city ordinance.

Rand Watson, Former Mayor of Menan: "The problem lies in using quick fixes for the city council...not wanting to follow the ordinance".
He told the council that if they wanted to pass the special use permit, then they should change the city ordinance.
According to Watson, this is not the only instance where the city council has bypassed city ordinances.
Watson says that there had been many cases where the Planning and Zoning Department had skipped public hearings.
And, that the council allowed city clerk Stacy Scott to make decisions that weren't hers to make.
Another problem he had, was how much the city clerk made. Which he claimed, was 30 dollars an hour. A claim the clerk disputes.
Stacy Scott, Menan City Clerk:"I make 21 dollars an hour. I receive no benefits. However, I only work 19 hours a week. If I worked 40 hours a week at 30 dollars an hour, I could understand where there would be some concern but I don't make that much."
Scott also told me today that she and the mayor never had a problem before his resignation and that he never spoke to her about his concerns with either Planning and Zoning or with her.
The small town has been shaken by the change of events and some residents say the former mayor did a lot for the community.
Eric Beck, Menan Resident: "He's done a lot for Menan in the little bit of time that he's been in there. And he's cleaned it up...he's done a lot".

George Ellsworth, Menan Resident: "I just think its sad to lose and individual who has put so much time and effort into a community".
I spoke with city council member Neil Jensen today, by phone. In a statement, he said, "This in an unfortunate situation. Mayor Watson served faithfully for many years. It is my hope that we can all rise above this and move on".
But chances are, this isn't the last we'll hear from either side.
