Menan Mayor Resigns
By Mary Sturgill
A government shake up in Menan. the mayor is resigning effective immediately
Rand Watson emailed the city council and channel 3 this afternoon detailing his reasons for resigning. In that email he said he did not "wish to be part of a city government that goes against their oath of office. " And this evening I spoke with him about the resignation. After several incidences, he has two main issues. He says that the city clerk makes and extravagant amount of money for such a small city and the council doesn't follow city ordinances when approving new developments. He feels he had not other choice. "Just my hands were tied. There wasn't anything I could do and I feel like maybe this way something will change and I hope it will. I hope that the council will wise up and learn the ordinances and rely on their own thinking and interpretation of the ordinances and not the city clerk's." Watson's decision comes just days after he walked out of last week's city council meeting. We talked to one of the Menan city council members earlier today on the phone. Gary Maples says quote, " I thought he was doing a good job and I just don't know what happened. I'm just really disappointed it has happened this way." Maples tells us the president of the council, Brady White is acting as interim mayor and will likely nominate someone to fill his spot on the council. A city wide vote likely won't take place until December 2009. That's when Watson's term would have ended. |
