Bomb Found in Pocatello
By Wes Horrocks
Residents in Pocatello are breathing a sigh of relief after police disposed of a bomb found inside a trailor on S. 5th Ave. late last night. Several nearby residents were asked to evacuate their homes while, but luckily no one was injured.
About 7:00 PM last night officers from the Idaho State Police and Pocatello Police Department entered a trailer at 4700 S. 5th Ave. in Pocatello as part of a narcotics investigation. But inside they found what appeared to be a bomb. Captain Rick Capell, with the Pocatello Police said, "They saw what appeared to be an explosive device. It was a jar filled with black powder, that appears to be gun powder, and it has a fuse sticking out of it." After finding the suspicious device officers quickly closed down surrounding streets and evacuated nearby trailers. "We've evacuated a mandatory evacuation within 50 feet and we've suggested evacuation within 300 feet," said Capell. Officers also called the Idaho Falls bomb squad to remove the explosive from the trailor and destroy it. I spoke to several neighbors this afternoon that declined to be on camera who tell me they're frightened that a bomb was found so close to their homes. Tthey also say it makes them worried about their children who often play in the area. Once the bomb was removed dogs searched for other explosives and an all-clear was given. Capell said, "It's fine to come down South 5th. We've got the area where there's the potential danger sealed off-we're fine." Law enforcement officials also say that there has been some discussion of putting together a pocatello bomb squad to deal with any similar problems in the future. |
