Chubbuck & Pocatello City Wide Cleanup
By Wes Horrocks
The cities of Pocatello and Chubbuck are getting some much needed spring cleaning today-all part of the city-wide cleanup. Residents cleaned their own property, and many even helped pick-up debris throughout the area.
Today's cleanup is not only a chance for residents of Pocatello and Chubbuck to start their spring cleaning, city officials also say it's a time for people to get to know their neighbors. Mayor Steven England, Chubbuck City Mayor said, "It gives us a chance to partner with the rest of the community, with Pocatello, and to get together and make things better." The morning started with a community pancake breakfast at the Old Town Pavilon on Main Street. Then groups of volunteers split-up throughout the city to fill up their black garbage bags. Mayor Roger Chase, Pocatello City Mayor said, "It's one of our biggest volunteer efforts of the year. Hundreds of people will be out today cleaning up areas of the city, along the Greenway, in our parks, along our roadways." About 200 of those volunteers came from Pocatello High School, cleaning up the school grounds and the surrounding neighborhood. Volunteer Amanda Allen said, "It's awesome to clean things up. And it's fun...it's fun to be out here. And it's nice weather today too so that's even better." Her friend Katie Chandler added, "It's really cool and fun to be with everyone cleaning up our school and neighborhood." Today's events also marked the opening of the Southeast Idaho Farmer's Market. Stephanie Palagi, with Historic Old Town Pocatello explained how the market work, "The vendors here at the Southeast Idaho Farmer's Market are from our local area. They're growers and crafters. To be part of the farmer's market their products either have to be grown or hand-made." The market will be open until the end of October. Both the Chubbuck and Pocatello city mayors say they hope today's cleaning efforts will continue throughout the year in order to maintian the area's beauty. |
