Some local 4th graders are getting hands-on experience learning about Idaho's state fish, the Cutthroat Trout. Channel 3 Eyewitness News Reporter Sarah Schwabe spent the afternoon with these students, and has more on "Trout in the Classroom."

It may seem like an ordinary lesson in Mrs. Kepler's 4th grade class.

"We're learning about the parts of a fish," says 4th grader David Toft.
"How they're able to swim," says 9 year old Taylor Romriell.

But these students along with two other 4th grade classes at Lewis and Clark Elementary, are raising trout.

"We have to feed them and measure them," says 4th grader Talicia Barela.

"Kids learn a lot more if you just go and do it. I can teach fish all day in the classroom, but for them to come down and feed the fish and take care of them, that's a lifetime learning experience for all of them," says 4th grade teacher Alicia Kepler.

This hands on science project is part of a statewide program through the Department of Fish and Game, aimed at connecting kids with wildlife.

"When kids are introduced to wildlife at an early age then really learn to love and appreciate it as they grow older," says Jennifer Jackson, and educator with the Department of Fish and Game.

Ten schools throughout the region are involved in the project. They were all given the fish and equipment, along with detailed lesson plans. And at the end of the year these students will have to part ways with their new fishy friends, and let them spread their wings, or fins rather.

"At the end of the school year, we're going to take them out and put them in the river," says 9 year old Taylor Romriell.
