Soapbox: Kid Friendly Programs

Tonight marks the third edition of our series Soapbox Pocatello. Two weeks ago we gave the community a chance to step up to the mic and voice their concerns and visions for Pocatello.

Some parents came forward and wanted to know more about what kid friendly programs are offered in town. Tonight, we look into it.

So far we've looked at the city's bus system.

"Extend the wait times and limit the wait period."

And problems with a busy intersection.

"People do drive quite fast through here."

Tonight, it's all about where kids go to have fun.

"We could improve by providing more activities for children ages one through preschool years."

"I think having a few more indoor recreation centers or something for the kids to do, not indoor playing the sports game, would really help."

So we made some calls to see what kid friendly programs are out there. First, if you are the parent of a toddler, or younger, the pickings are a little slim. But the Bannock Youth Foundation tries to fill the gap with weekly play groups.

"We have structured activities like craft time and music time, story time," says coordinator Candice Camper," "when kids get together they are learning so many different things about socializing."

And it's not just for the kids.

"The biggest component of our groups is we have parent support, it addresses parenting issues like discipline, child development, nutritious food," says Camper.

"I'm on a learning curve just as much as my two year old is," says mother Tina Clezie.

For the older kids, Pocatello's Director of Parks and Recreation says there are plenty of ways to get involved. Parents just need to do their homework.

"Really if people go out and really find out what is available in the community, a lot of times they find out there are a lot of programs for their kids," says Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Sepich.

During the winter, the Mink Creek Nordic Ski Area is popular. Kids can learn to cross country ski and snow shoe.
And if you're looking for more indoor activities.

"Down here at the community rec center of course we're offering dance classes, and tumbling classes, cheer leading classes," says Sepich.

You contact the Department of Parks and Recreation at 232-3901 or visit their website at www.pocatello.us for a complete list of activities offered. If you want to get in touch with the Birth to 3 Program at the Bannock Youth Foundation, call Candice at 234-1122 x15.
