St. Anthony Digging Out; Disaster Declared

St. Anthony Digging Out; Disaster Declared

By Nate Eaton

Eastern Idaho is digging out tonight after another big snow storm pounds our area.

Some places got over a foot of snow and cities and counties are scrambling to keep up with it.

Bill Beck, St. Anthony Mayor: "Our city crews have just done a super human job."

It's been a while since Fremont County has seen this much snow and crews are working nonstop 24 hours a day plowing, scooping, hauling, and dumping.

Beck: "The last time that I remember was somewhere around 94-95. We're gonna be out plowing the streets again tonight and we'll have more burms to be removed."

All the snow has forced the county and the city of St. Anthony to issue a disaster declaration...meaning money can be moved around the budget to pay for overtime and extra snow removal crews.

Beck: "We have a street budget of $250,000 a year. Snow removal is the top priority. At the end of the snow season what's left we'll use it to do whatever we need to do with."

Doyle Walters, Carport Collapsed: "It's probably about as bad as we've seen."

Doyle Walters knows firsthand how bad the snow's been. He was taking out his trash when he looked over at his carport and saw it had collapsed onto his car.

Walters: "I guess the snow got too heavy for it and just kinked it in the middle. We got it braced up now. It was on the ground."

Doyle says the carport company is going to fix it for him but he and the mayor are telling everyone to keep an eye on their roofs.

Beck: "We're encouraging neighbors to help neighbors and church groups to get out and help."

As part of the disaster declaration, cars must be removed from city roads by 9pm. If they're not, they will get towed.

The mayor doesn't know how long this will last but it will run through the end of the week.
