Self Expression on the Greenbelt
By Danielle Leigh
If you have kids you may want to check out the largest youth arts festival in Eastern Idaho.
The three-day Roaring Youth Jam started Thursday. From legal graffiti, to a junk jam, the Snake River Roaring Youth Jam is all about getting in touch with the arts. Most of the kids say the best part is all of the, "painting." Others had their own opinions. "The best part is going to do the cups," says Aaliya Nichols. The Arts Council spends about 65 thousand dollars so kids can express themselves in less conventional ways. "I painted a smiley face, and it was blue," says one girl. "I made a spider," says Christian Alarcon. This time around, the struggling economy made getting to that benchmark a challenge. "That hits us first with private donations because they're feeling more nervous, and they're not quite as generous," says Visual Arts Education Director Catherine Smith. Parents tell me the event is well worth the penny pinching. "There's a lot of variety each kid can find something they absolutely love and the fact that it's free that really makes a big difference for me," says Jamee Nichols. Not only that, all that self expression can be very educational. "You get to know your kids a little better when you see the art projects they are doing," says Nichols. Educational, not just for the parents but also for the kids. "Your brain actually works a little more efficiently when you go to look at math, and science. So, it's actually a brain builder to be artistic and to express yourself," says Smith. If you haven't gotten a chance to catch the Snake River Youth Jam you have two more days to do it it starts at 10 AM and ends at 4 PM in Idaho Falls. |
