Amtrekker on a Mission

Imagine quitting your job and beginning a cross-country trek with only the items you could fit in a single backpack.

Well that's exactly what one 27-year-old from California is doing in an attempt to complete his bucket list.

He calls himself the Amtrekker, and he's been unemployed and living on a pray and a meager budget since last July.

That's when Brett Rounsaville quit his job as a designer for Disney and hit the road with a list of 50 things he has to do before going home.

For almost nine months now Brett's been living on the streets, and following only two rules.

Rule number one: he can't spend any money on lodging.

"I've slept out on the sidewalk in San Diego, and I sleep on trains and buses," says Brett.

Rule number two: he can't go home until he's done everything on his bucket list.

"It was one of those things where if you don't do it now you're never going to. Never in my wildest most optimistic imaginings would I have thought it's gone as well as it has. It's been a new adventure every single day. What amazes me more than anything else is how kind people are all over the city," says Brett.

So far the list has taken Brett from Pennsylvania where he milked a cow on an Amish farm, to Maryland where he went hang gliding and most recently to Utah where he learned to fly fish.

"If you are willing to do this you have to be willing to be uncomfortable most of the time," says Brett.

In Utah, Brett responded to a ride share posted by Tricia Zirker's sister on Craig's List.

"It's an Internet posting where you can go and like say I'm going from here to there and I'm either offering a ride or I need a ride," says Tricia.

Her sister was coming to Idaho Falls to visit family and wanted to save money on gas.

"Just have a good time and meet some new people," says Tricia.

That's when Brett and Tricia met.

"I was like that's awesome," says Tricia.

Tomorrow she'll be helping Brett along on his journey around the Northwest by escorting him to Boise.

"And then after that I have to head to New Jersey to go on the fastest roller coaster in the country," says Brett.

Brett has a little less than twenty items left on his bucket list before he heads home.

If you'd like to track his process, he posts all of his adventures on his website www.amtrekker.com.
