An Idaho Falls native recently represented the entire state in a fierce piano competition.

Eyewitness News Reporter Tommy Noel spoke with this gifted musician in a special edition of Everybody Has a Story.

Although her music sounds like the work of a seasoned musician, Meagan Barnes is only in 9th grade.

The Taylorview Junior High Student has piano playing in her blood, and it all started at a young age.

"When I was little, I used to always bang on the keys, so finally my mom put me in piano lessons. When I was little I would practice for 4 hours a day," says Meagan Barnes.

The practicing has since been cut down to 2 hours a day, thanks to school, student council, cheerleading, and your typical teenage life.

Her song of choice come from India.

"They are loud and poundy. I like that. It keeps me interested. I can't play slow songs," says Meagan.

Meagan went to Boise for a state piano competition.

"You have to play 4 songs, all have to be memorized. I played a Bethoven, a Bach, a Shopan, and a Griffice," says Meagan.

She won the Boise competition and competed in Montana for regionals.. And she's not done yet.

"I'm gonna keep doing competitions. There's lots in this area I can do," says Meagan.

And there's a lot more she wants to do, Meagan is excited for high school and hopes to major in nutrition and minor in... you guessed it.. piano.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
