Calvin McOmber

Calvin McOmber

By Tommy Noel

This week's edition of Everybody Has a Story takes Eyewitness News Reporter Tommy Noel to Rigby.

Today he met a Pocatello High and ISU grad who has a tiny piece of the ocean in his living room.

"I've got a lot of hobbies. Probably too many. But that keeps life interesting and varied," says Calvin McOmber.

Retired for just one month as an industrial microbiologist, Calvin McOmber still manages to keep himself busy, whether he's building a new project or keeping up his rock collection..

"Unfinished garnets, that I personally dug in Saint Mary's Idaho area," says Calvin.

And since he's retired now, Calvin has plenty of time to spend with his 9 kids.

"I'm very proud of them. Turned out quite well. Thanks to their mom, in spite of their dad," says Calvin.

And lets not forget about the 26 grandchildren.

But the hobby that caught my eye was his 320 gallon salt water aquarium in his living room.

"We try to mimic the actual water in the coral reef. That's obviously impossible, but we try to get as close as we can," says Calvin.

When kids learn about the coral reef in school, they stop by Calvin's house for an up close lesson, it's a lot cheaper than flying to Hawaii.

"Sometimes compete with each other, kill each other," says Calvin.

That would be the animals in the tank, not the kids.

"It's amazing what goes on in their life, that happens underneath the ocean. Beautiful," says Calvin.

And it's amazing at what you can find by randomly opening up the phonebook for the next 'Everybody has a Story.'
