Lavon Reed

Lavon Reed

By Tommy Noel

It's a sad week here at Channel 3 Eyewitness News.

Our Chief Photographer, Lavon Reed, is retiring.

He started at KIDK in 1966..

Tommy Noel had the difficult assignment of covering 40 years in about two minutes.

If you've watched KIDK over the last 4 decades, you've seen the work of Lavon Reed.

And after 41 years, Lavon has decided to hang up his tripod.

When Lavon started, he was considered an introvert. Very shy and quiet.

But today... "You can't shut me up!" says Lavon Reed.

Ask any journalist what their first story was, and they'll tell you like it was yesterday. The same goes for Lavon. It was September of 1966.

"It was the United Way Breakfast. They had them at 6 in the morning," says Lavon.

He was at Channel 3 when we went from black and white to color.. When we went Film to Video to Digital. And when our slogan was "East Idaho Turns Us On."

Have a conversation with Lavon and you'll take a stroll down TV Memory Lane.

"This is one of the first TV cameras we had in our studio. We televised color back in the 60's," says Lavon.

One of Lavon's most memorable moments happened in 2002. His camera was rolling when kidnapped victim Megan Kerr called home, saying she was alive.

And when Lavon steps out of KIDK's doors one last time, he still has a lot to accomplish.

"I feel there is a mission of some sort out there for me. Something I can get involved with. A humanitarian thing or something," says Lavon.

Lavon's favorite phrase is "Do It to It." And he's been doing it to it for 40 years.

"The people I've worked with here. I'll take them in my heart and remember the good times we've had together," says Lavon.

And while us rookies move on from the Idaho Falls market, we'll never forget our good friend Lavon Reed.
